The UK is an island which means that it is completely surrounded by water. For this reason Britain has a huge amount of coast line of around 7,760 miles. For such a small country this is enormous indeed. Britain is made up of around 7,000 islands most of which are around the coast of Scotland. These are the Hebrides, The Orkneys and The Shetland Isles. Our most southerly islands are the Scilly Isles and then there are the Channel Islands which are very close to France.
